Ken Opala is the founding director of the African Investigative News Service, a news syndicate specializing in development journalism driven by investigative reporting. He is a founding board member of the Johannesburg-based Forum for African Investigative Reporters (FAIR) and the former deputy investigative editor of the Nation Media Group.
He has won numerous awards over his decades-long career in investigative journalism, including the Natali Lorenzo Prize in Human Rights Journalism for a series of articles on the death penalty for The Daily Nation, the Peter Jenkins Award for Conservation Journalism, East Africa, CNN’s African Journalist of the Year, the Kenya Print Journalism Award and others. He has consulted and freelanced for a host of international organizations and outlets on long-term research and reporting
